1. Academic Writing Centre

   
Academic Writing Centre aims to further develop communication skills in your academic discipline. More specifically, the course will focus on reading and writing ability in a variety of academic registers, as well as developing listening and speaking skills through one-to-one sessions. The centre aims to raise awareness of the conventions of written academic literacy for non-native English speakers. The centre will also help to improve your writing ability in a variety of text types, focusing on sentence-level lexis and syntax, text coherence and cohesion, and appropriate style.  We aim to help improve your ability to perform all written tasks on your degree program: course assignments and reports, examination essays, and dissertations.
 
Thanks to the activities and one-to-one sessions at the centre, you will be expected to: 
·         Understand and use theories and conventions of written academic literacy,
·         Use rhetorical and logical strategies to express ideas effectively in writing, 
·         Develop your own voice and position yourself in texts,
·         Employ relevant strategies for distinct tasks, ranging from unseen examination essays to prepared coursework on undergraduate degree programs. 
 

2. English Conversation Club

The English Conversation Club is an opportunity to practice your English speaking with the world. Attend the club to interact with staff and students from across campus, representing all levels and faculties. Every week is a chance to expand your perspectives through a variety of topics. The English Conversation Club (ECC) is a place for students, staff, and faculty from Turkey and worldwide to share their perspectives, culture, and viewpoints on a wide variety of topics. A chance to see how your world views contrast and compare to others, and a chance to interact and build relationships with a diverse group of individuals. We play in and around topics that may not be found in your everyday academic interactions by sharing insights, opinions, and questions. Though the perspectives are varied, the predominant language of conversation is English. You may find new ideas and interesting ways to express them, or you may even find a few new alternative ways to express older familiar ideas. 
All levels of thought are welcome, communicators especially welcome.

3. One-to-One English -Tutorials


Our One-to-One English options can be completely tailor-made according to your needs and objectives. This option is particularly useful for students who have a very particular need or for students who wish to learn very intensively.
Content tailored to your needs - highly personalized tuition to help you succeed in your goals. Working with your own personal teacher, you will identify the specific language areas and skills that you wish to improve and together create your own special program of learning. Our teachers will provide suitable materials for the focus you have chosen.

4. English Language Skills Workshops

§  Grammar in Speaking

You will review grammar topics such as verb tenses, articles, and pronouns. Then, students will participate in speaking activities to identify, correct, and practice their own grammar use in spoken English. 

§  Idioms in Conversation 

The instructor will introduce idioms for conversation and lead students in a discussion activity using these idioms. Students will discover the meaning of figurative language from the context of the conversation.

§  Impromptu Speaking

 
You will practice speaking skills and formulating answers to respond to questions they haven’t previously thought about. This type of “on the spot” interaction promotes language fluency and comfort level with spoken English.

§  Listening Strategies

You will practice academic listening and note-taking skills. Students will learn to recognize transitions and key vocabulary to help organize information from lectures.

§  Reading Strategies

You will review and learn reading strategies such as efficient reading, active reading, techniques for college courses, annotating and note-taking. You will also practice using contextual cues for meaning and improving reading fluency.

§  Spoken English Fluency 

This workshop will help make you aware of elements of spoken English beyond pronunciation, such as lexical “chunks”, intonation, pauses, and syllable/word stress. You will leave with exercises and further information on how to continue to develop their skills. 
§  Exam Strategies
Before you take your next exam, consider the following: how you will prepare for the exam? What strategies will you use during the exam? And what can you do after the exam to improve your performance on the next test?  This workshop will help you navigate the critical stages of test prep to increase your confidence in your next exam.
